The Story Behind "Peculiar Kids"
Why “Peculiar” Kids?
Most people immediately think negatively about the word peculiar — but when you look deeper, you’ll find there’s so much more to it:
Royal
Special
Different
Treasure
The name Peculiar Kids came as an inspiration from the Lord after much prayer. In the Bible, the word peculiar means royal, special, and different. It first appears in Exodus 19:5, where God calls Israel His “peculiar treasure.” The children of Israel were slaves when God called them peculiar — chosen not because of their circumstances, but because of His love. In the same way, many of the children we serve may be facing difficult situations today, yet God still calls them special and treasured.

Our founder’s story reflects this truth. Growing up in poverty in Liberia, she dreamed of becoming a missionary nurse, uncertain how it would happen amid civil conflict. In 1993, she met American missionaries David and June Drevlow, who were helping translate the Bible into the Vai dialect. Moved by compassion, David gave her one hundred U.S. dollars — exactly what she needed to enroll in college. That simple act of obedience and generosity changed her life and inspired her to give back.

Today, she is a Christian, supporting families in Liberia and the United States — helping to raise happy and successful children.
At Peculiar Kids, we believe every child is unique and capable of success. Many children from poor backgrounds may feel overlooked, forgotten by society, or even by God. Our mission is to remind them that in Christ, they are special, royal, and deeply loved — and that what matters most is not what others say about them, but what God says.
As the saying goes, “Let the God who creates you define you.” This truth lies at the heart of everything we do at Peculiar Kids.
